CITY OF CULTURE AND SPORT
CITY OF HISTORY
Debrecen has embraced the Protestant Reformation quite early, earning the monikers "the Calvinist Rome". It has served as the nation's capital twice, in 1849 and at the turn of 1944-45. In the city's armour, there is a phoenix bird, which symbolizes the revival of the city after burning down several times.
